The United States has launched the first trial operations of its electric air taxi programme, marking a major step toward integrating electric aircraft into the country’s future transportation network.
The initial demonstration flights were conducted under a pilot programme led by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the US Department of Transportation, with aircraft transporting human organs for transplant between the states of Maryland and Virginia.
The successful flights are part of the Electric Vertical Take-off and Landing (eVTOL) Integration Pilot Program, a multi-year initiative designed to assess the safety, operational capability and real-world performance of electric air taxis before they enter commercial service.
BETA Technologies, an electric aviation company backed by Amazon, has been selected to participate in seven of the programme’s eight pilot projects. During the initial missions, the company transported organs prepared by biotechnology firm United Therapeutics, covering a total distance of approximately 275 nautical miles.
BETA Technologies Chief Executive Officer Kyle Clark said the successful trials could pave the way for affordable electric air transport for medical applications across the United States.
Experts have long viewed electric air taxis as a promising solution for reducing urban traffic congestion while supporting emergency medical services, cargo transportation and defence operations. However, commercial passenger services have been delayed in recent years due to lengthy regulatory approval processes.
According to the report, the pilot programme was launched under an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump last year to accelerate the certification and deployment of electric air taxis.
The programme spans 26 US states and includes eight pilot projects, with BETA Technologies participating in the majority of them.
The company expects its eVTOL aircraft to receive full certification by 2028, while its conventional runway-operated electric aircraft could be approved as early as 2027.
